A cough is the body's way of clearing foreign substances and secretions from the lungs to prevent infection. The causes of a cough vary, including allergies, asthma or the common cold. According to Brigitte Mars and Chrystle Fiedler, authors of "The Country Almanac of Home Remedies," you can use cayenne pepper to relieve the symptoms of a cough. Cayenne pepper has antiseptic properties that can help clear lung and throat congestion. Always talk to your doctor before taking any alternative treatment.

Step 1

Pour 8 oz. of water into a cup. Measure 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper powder and add to water.

Step 2

Stir the mixture with a spoon.

Step 3

Take a few sips of the mixture and gargle for one minute before spitting out into the sink. Continue to gargle with the mixture until it is finished. You may use this mixture whenever you need relief from your cough throughout the day.
