Many people spend an inordinate amount of time on their feet each day. Jobs that require you to be on your feet, walking or running, or even pain from arthritis and other age-related disorders can leave you with extremely sore, tired feet. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, warm foot baths can decrease fatigue and pain in your feet. Additionally, soaking is a beneficial way to alleviate sore feet, increase circulation in your feet and promote overall feelings of relaxation.
Step 1
Fill a large basin or foot bath with warm, not hot, water. Using water that is too hot can be dangerous, especially if you have a condition such as insulin-dependent diabetes, arteriosclerosis, circulatory disorders or Buerger's disease, according to Amazing Health.
Step 2
Add 1 cup of Epsom salts to your basin or foot bath.
Step 3
Mix in a few drops of an invigorating or relaxing essential oil of your choice. According to "Beauty by Nature," lemon, eucalyptus and marjoram are essential oils that can help to refresh and invigorate your feet. Lavender, rose and chamomile essential oils promote relaxation and stress relief.
Step 4
Soak your feet in the foot bath or basin for 10 to 15 minutes. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends regular soaking, as opposed to soaking only when you have pain. Regular soaking can increase your circulation and prevent foot pain caused by fatigue and stress.
Step 5
Dry your feet with a soft, absorbent towel. Apply a thick, soothing foot lotion or cream to your feet immediately for additional benefits.
