Glaucoma describes a number of potentially eye-damaging diseases that affect the optic nerve and result in vision loss and sometimes blindness. The Glaucoma Research Foundation reports that early detection and treatment of glaucoma is the best way to manage the disease. Comprehensive dilated eye exams are recommended biannually. Supplements may also help, but they should be approved by your doctor.
Fish Oil
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health, existing in certain types of fish, nuts and some plant life. Among the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are aiding brain function, reducing inflammation in the body, and supporting normal growth and development. As an eye-health supplement, omega-3 fatty acids may help decrease your likelihood of developing eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma, as evidenced in studies comparing people with and without the diseases. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that people who consumed the most fish or maintained a healthy balance of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids were less likely to have the eye diseases. Talk to your doctor before using omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil, as side effects and drug interactions may occur.
Lutein
Lutein is an antioxidant-rich nutrient found in fruits, vegetables and egg yolks. A part of the carotenoid family, a family of vitamin A-related chemicals, lutein gives color to carrots, sweet potatoes, and other vibrant fruits and vegetables. Due to the antioxidant activity of lutein, supplements may reduce oxidative damage around the optic nerve that occurs with glaucoma. The Lutein Information Bureau reports that consuming a minimum of 6 mg to10 mg daily of lutein supports eye health. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of lutein supplements for vision and glaucoma.
Zinc
Zinc is a trace element that is highly concentrated in the ocular tissue. An integral player in the role of eye health and normal ocular functioning, zinc is found in foods such as seafood, lean meats, eggs, leafy green vegetables, peanuts and whole bran. Zinc supplements may be used to support eye health and help reduce damage caused by glaucoma and other eye diseases. Talk to your doctor before using zinc supplements.
