Karate is type of martial art that teaches the values of patience, discipline and self-defense. Although the skills learned can make someone a strong fighter in hand-to-hand combat, the philosophy of the martial art does not approve of being the first to strike out against someone. As various skills of both physical and mental natures are mastered, students of karate advance to new levels of stature signified by the color of their belt. This belt is always worn during karate practices and competition, and it is to be tied in a certain way.

Step 1

Take one end of the belt and hold it across your stomach with your right hand, letting a few inches of the end hang down loosely in front of you. Often one end has a label attached to it, depending on the manufacturer -- if yours has this, grip this end at your abdomen. Bring the rest of the belt around your back and to the other side, holding it in your left hand.

Step 2

Make another loop around your waist without moving the label end of your belt.

Step 3

Bring the non-label end -- the one in your left hand -- over the label end, then under the two belt layers. Pull both ends to tighten the belt, then fold the non-label end over and down, making it cross over the label end by pulling the label end underneath it.

Step 4

Loop the label end up and around the belt and the other end of the knot.

Step 5

Pull both ends to tighten the knot. Both ends should be the same length. If they are not, loosen the knot and pull on the ends to adjust their length, then tighten the knot again.
