How to Lose Weight on the Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse diet is a weight-loss program that is considered a fad diet, because it consists of eating or drinking the same thing for the duration of the diet as an extreme way of losing weight. The diet was created in the 1970s by Stanley Burroughs, author of "The Master Cleanser." Burroughs was not a doctor, and the Master Cleanse diet is not recommended nor approved by the FDA. Although you will lose weight while following the Master Cleanse diet, you will most likely gain the weight back after you resume eating other foods.

Step 1

Ease into the diet 3 days in advance. On the first day, eat only salad, seeds and nuts. The second day, drink only fruit and vegetable juice and clear broths, like chicken broth or vegetable broth. The third day, drink only orange juice. According to the diet, the ease-in days will prepare you for the liquid-only portion of the Master Cleanse.

Step 2

Prepare the Master Cleanse drink. In a large pitcher, combine 14 tbsp. fresh lemon juice, 14 tbsp. maple syrup, 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper and 2 quarts of water. Mix until thoroughly blended, then chill if desired.

Step 3

Drink the entire portion of the Master Cleanse liquid throughout the day. This is the only food or beverage you will consume in the entire day, and you will need to make a new portion every morning.

Step 4

Continue fasting, drinking nothing but the Master Cleanse juice for as long as you feel comfortable. Ten days is recommended, although if you are feeling faint, stop the diet.

Step 5

Ease into your normal eating routine with a 3-day routine. The first day after the diet, drink nothing but orange juice with 2 tbsp. per quart of maple syrup mixed in. The second day after the diet, drink fruit or vegetable juice and clear broth. The third day after the diet, eat only fruits and vegetables.
