A well-chosen pillow can help you sleep more comfortably and wake feeling refreshed. There is no single side sleeper pillow that is best for everyone. Every body is shaped differently and every person has different preferences, so try a variety of different styles to find the pillow that works best for you.
Features
A pillow supports your head and neck while you sleep, keeping them in proper alignment and relieving pressure. Choose a pillow that supports your head and neck in a naturally straight, horizontal line with even weight distribution. Some people who sleep on their side prefer orthopedic or cervical pillows that feature a thicker pillow with a depression to cradle the head.
Materials
In 2010, the "Journal of Pain Research" published the results of a study comparing how pillows made from different materials affected neck stiffness and other cervical symptoms among people who sleep on their side. The experimental pillows were made from feathers, regular foam, contour foam, polyester or latex. The latex pillow performed best, while the feather pillow performed worst. Researchers found no differences between the regular and contour foam pillows. Regardless of the pillow material you choose, inspect your pillow regularly for signs of wear and replace your pillow as soon as necessary.
Comfort
Choose a pillow surface or cover that is comfortable and pleasing to you. If you prefer a warm pillow, you might enjoy a flannel cover or pillowcase, for example. If you prefer a cool pillow, you might enjoy a cotton or satin pillowcase. If you have allergies, you may be more comfortable with a pillow made from hypoallergenic materials and with no feathers.
Considerations
If you sleep on your side, you may need support for more than just your head and neck. A small pillow or rolled up towel under your waist can provide additional support. A pillow between your knees can prevent lower back pain by keeping your spine in a neutral position; chiropractor John Schubbe recommends a firm pillow rather than a softer pillow for this use. You may prefer a single body pillow to provide support for your entire body rather than choosing separate pillows for different areas of your body.
