There are many reasons a smoker should kick the habit---97 according to Health.com. Although there is a mountain of research data about the extreme health impact smoking has on the human body, many smokers find the thought of quitting terrifying. Many who try to escape nicotine's grip come up short. The United States Surgeon General says nothing will improve the quality or longevity of a smoker's life more than giving up cigarettes.
Medication and Nicotine Replacements
Quitting smoking will never be an easy proposition, but there are aids that improve your chances of success. Medications available with a doctor's prescription include Zyban and Chantix. Nicotine replacement therapy comes in either gum or a patch, purchased over the counter. Nicotine replacements offer help with the physical withdrawal symptoms while medications help with the mental aspects of quitting.
Support System
According to the American Cancer Society, a smoker is twice as likely to succeed in his effort to quit smoking if he has a support group of some kind. The support can come from a variety of sources, including family and friends. Support can also come from support programs, designed for the smoker trying to quit. The American Cancer Society reports that as of 2009, every state in the United States offers call-in support centers for smokers, staffed with trained counselors ready to help.
Exercise
While you are in the process of quitting smoking, exercising more will help, according to The Lung Association. If you are beginning an exercise program, begin slowly and build up your endurance over time. Exercise can help divert your attention, at least for a while, from the thought of smoking. Exercise will increase your energy levels and improve your mood. In addition, burning extra calories can help keep you from gaining weight, a problem that can arise while kicking the habit.
Select a Quit Date
Selecting a quit date several weeks in advance has its advantages---do not wait for the perfect time in your life to quit. Once you select the day, update all of your calendars. Let all of your supporters know the date as well. Begin taking small steps before your quit date arrives, such as eliminating smoking at home or while driving. Re-enforce the reasons you are quitting by writing them down and repeating them to yourself throughout the day.
