Una de gato or cat's claw is an herb native to the Peruvian Amazon. Although the herb has been used for centuries by various indigenous peoples to treat a number of health problems, it has become popular as an alternative remedy only in the last couple of decades elsewhere. Few studies of its properties exist. If you want to try una de gato, consult your healthcare provider about incorporating it into your treatment plan.
Immune System
Una de gato is used to stimulate the immune system and help the body fight infections. In South America, una de gato is a popular alternative treatment for cancer, as the herb seems to slow down the formation of tumors. Because it boosts the immune system, una de gato is sometimes used by people with HIV, leukemia and rheumatic disorders to improve resistance to infections. A 2000 study showed that people who took una de gato when undergoing chemotherapy suffered fewer side effects and felt stronger and recuperated faster.
Intestinal Tract
Una de gato also seems to help with a number of gastrointestinal issues, including ulcers, gastritis, Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Large amounts of the herb can cause diarrhea and intestinal discomfort, however, so it's important to follow the dosage recommended on the package label. Dosage and concentrations vary among brands, so always double-check the label if you're trying a new product.
Anti-Inflammatory
Una de gato can help treat inflammation from a number of sources. Aside from inflammation of the bowel and intestines, it can also address inflammation of the joints and muscles, caused by either a temporary problem, such as an accident or a pulled muscle, or a chronic issue, such as rheumatism.
Other Uses
Una de gato seems to have antiviral and anti-mutagenic properties, making it a useful adjunct treatment for a variety of degenerative diseases. It might be useful in treating conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and cirrhosis. Indigenous tribes use una de gato as a treatment for diabetes, although its effectiveness hasn't been studied. The herb can also be used as an internal cleanser.
