Caffeine is a substance that can help you to feel more alert and energized. Consuming too much caffeine can cause you to feel anxious, jittery and may even prevent you from sleeping. It is important to know the caffeine content of foods and beverages to help ensure you consume appropriate amounts of caffeine each day. Beverages, such as coffee, soda and energy drinks, all contain over 30 mg caffeine per 8 oz. serving.

Caffeine

Consuming caffeine not only causes you to feel more awake and alert, it can also stimulate the nervous system and metabolism. The National Institutes of Health states that, for most people, consuming the amount of caffeine found in 2 to 4 cups of coffee each day is not harmful. However, consuming excessive amounts of caffeine can lead to feelings of anxiousness and irritability. Prolonged caffeine intake can cause headaches, sleeplessness and dehydration due to increased urination.

Caffeine in Foods

An 8 oz. cup of coffee contains 95 mg of caffeine. Like coffee, brewed tea also contains high amounts of caffeine with an 8 oz. serving providing anywhere from 20 to 120 mg caffeine. The caffeine content of coffee and tea varies based on the type of coffee or tea and the length of time the beverage is brewed. When compared to soft drinks, dark colored sodas contain less caffeine with an average of 45 mg caffeine per 12 oz. serving. Other caffeine-containing foods include chocolate and foods made with chocolate including cakes, cookies and ice cream.
