Being diagnosed with a thyroid condition can be an upsetting occurrence or a relief, depending on how long you've suffered from fatigue or sleeplessness without understanding why. A change in diet usually comes along with the territory, along with possible medication and a change in exercise regimen. Though exercise is important to keep the body's systems in good working condition, when suffering from a thyroid condition, it's best to moderate your activity.

Identification

The thyroid is butterfly-shaped tissue in the throat just beneath the Adam's apple. According to Dr. Mario Skugor in the book, "Thyroid Disorders," it regulates metabolism, controls the speed at which certain organs operate and even helps to determine how fast you think. An underactive thyroid, often referred to as hypothyroidism, slows everything in the body down, including the rate at which you process food and turn it into energy. An overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, speeds everything up and can lead to heart palpitations, among other reactions. Whether you are suffering from hypo- or hyperthyroidism, exercise can be a tricky endeavor.

Significance

When suffering from a thyroid condition, the type of exercise performed is important, because it can lead to a worsening of the situation. Intense exercise raises cortisol and forces the adrenals to work harder, according to Kathleen Barnes in the book, "User's Guide to Thyroid Disorders." Because the thyroid oversees adrenal function, overworking the adrenals eventually affects the thyroid. Instead of allowing the thyroid to heal, excessive exercise increases the demand on the thyroid.

Features

Moderate output may be the best approach to exercise when suffering from a thyroid condition. According to "12-Day Body Shaping Miracle" by Michael Thurmond, performing moderate exercise is a real boost to the metabolism. He also says that people who have thyroid disease often suffer from fatigue and that exercising too strenuously for too long can aggravate thyroid-related fatigue.

Considerations

If you suffer from thyroid issues, work closely with a doctor to determine the best diet and exercise regimen for you. You may need to go on medication or stay away from cardiovascular exercise. Be gentle with yourself with any exercise program, taking it slow at the beginning. A few minutes of meditation at the end of a workout may also be helpful.
