Giving blood is a great way to give back and it doesn't cost you a cent, just a little time. The whole process of giving blood only takes about an hour. You do have to meet certain requirements to give blood, such as weighing over 110 lbs. After giving blood, you shouldn't workout for at least five hours, or maybe longer.

The Process

According to the American Red Cross, to give blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 lbs. and fill out a health questionnaire. The phlebotomist will test your iron levels. If they do not meet the requirements, you will be turned down for donation. You will donate about 1 pint of blood and it takes about one hour. Immediately after donation, the staff encourages you to have a small snack and drink before you leave.

American Red Cross Guidelines

The American Red Cross provides care guidelines for you to follow after you donate blood. Drink plenty of fluids for the next 24 to 48 hours to replenish any you lost. If you feel light headed, lie down with your feet elevated until it passes. Avoid strenuous physical activity, which includes working out, or heavy lifting for about five hours after donating.

Effects

The average person has 10 to 12 pints of blood. When you donate, you give up about 10 percent of your total blood volume. Your blood pressure lowers and you may experience dizziness or be light headed. For these reasons, you should not work out immediately after donating blood. You could faint, drop a weight or injure yourself. At the least, you probably won't feel very good. Wait at least the recommended five hours, but ideally, don't work out until the next day.

Considerations

If you do workout soon after donating blood, cut back the intensity of your workout. Extend your warm-up and cool-down times. If today is heavy leg day, switch it to light chest and triceps day. Use lighter weights or do longer, less intense cardio. If you feel light headed, immediately stop your workout. This is a sign that your body isn't ready. Rest for the day and come back strong tomorrow.
