Vegetarianism provides an array of benefits. Vegetarians eliminate meat and dairy from their diet, making fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and soy the foundation of their meals. According to Mayo Clinic.com, vegetarians typically have low body weights, as well as low body mass indices. In addition, vegetarians greatly lower their risks for heart disease due to withdrawing from saturated fats. Though vegetarians are generally healthy, it is important to consider that in order to lose weight through vegetarianism, your must follow a healthy diet. Some vegetarian foods are high in fats, additives, preservatives and sugar, thus leading to weight gain. Be cautious of these foods and aim to stay within the realm of the recommended food groups.

Weight Loss

By switching to a vegetarian diet you will see fast weight loss. This is due to not eating saturated fats. Saturated fat, found in meat and dairy, does not break down in the body and quickly stores as fat within your system. A recent health study from Imperial College in London focused on two group, a vegetarian group and a non-vegetarian group. The study found that the vegetarian group lost more weight than the other group, even though they consumed more calories. In order to lose weight from this diet you must eat only healthy vegetarian food. Avoid foods that contain high amounts or sugar, sodium, caffeine or any preservatives.

Diet

To lose weight with a vegetarian diet it is important to consume mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and soy. Breakfast can be fruits or a soy milk shake. Lunch can be a large salad with walnuts and avocados. Dinner can be whole wheat pasta with sautéed broccoli. Dessert options range from soy ice cream to tofu ice cream. Snack throughout the day on seeds, such as pumpkin or sunflower seeds, which have healthy fats that aid in suppressing hunger. This is a healthy, balanced diet that incorporates all of the needed food groups for a vegetarian diet, but also lacks the unhealthy foods that may be considered vegetarian.

Benefits

Vegetarianism will not only lead to weight loss, but also plays an important role in preventing heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, vegetarians have a significantly lower chance of heart disease. The American Cancer Society also recommends a vegetarian diet to prevent disease.

Considerations

Keep in mind that weight loss will only be evident if you are eating the fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and soy that are recommended. It is important to avoid processed foods and foods with high fructose corn syrup, as it is difficult to digest. Avoid soda and beverages with added sugar or caffeine. Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated and energized.
