Your hips, thighs and buttocks are pocked with cellulite, that accumulation of fat that makes your skin look dimpled. Certain oil treatments claim to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, and while they may be able to do this temporarily, no topical product will make the problem vanish. Be realistic in your expectations of cellulite oils, and understand that this is likely a genetic condition that can be lessened but never cured.

Causes of Cellulite

When fat gathers under your skin and pushes against in, it creates cellulite. Thin and overweight people alike can develop this condition, though being heavy often makes the dimpling look more pronounced. Factors like stress, an inactive lifestyle, poor diet, dehydration and hormonal changes can all contribute to the development of cellulite as well. It runs in families, and if your relatives have it, you are likely to experience it as well. Once cellulite has formed, nothing can eliminate all of it.

Topical Treatments

Cellulite-reducing oils may claim to decrease the appearance of cellulite, and if they do, it will be temporary. According to AgingSkinNet, no topical product can penetrate your skin in a way that allows the cellulite to be flushed from your body. At best, the oils will tighten your skin for a small amount of time, making the dimpled appearance less noticeable. They may also firm up your skin and smooth its texture, helping to reduce the uneven feel of your lumps and bumps.

Application Tips

To get the most out of a topical cellulite treatment, first wash your skin with a gentle cleanser. Rinse it off, and then exfoliate with a natural-bristle body brush or a creamy scrub if your skin is prone to irritation. Use the brush or apply the scrub using a vigorous circular motion, which will increase the circulation under your skin, as well as get rid of the dead cells that can prevent the anti-cellulite oil from being absorbed. Do this for one minute, rinse off again and pat dry. Apply the oil using the same massaging motion, and allow it to soak in for five minutes before you get dressed.

Alternative Solutions

Making certain lifestyle changes may also help lessen the appearance of cellulite. Eat a generous amount of fruit, vegetables and fiber-rich foods, and keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight, as rapid weight loss and gain can contribute to cellulite. If you are concerned about the appearance of your cellulite, consult with a dermatologist who may be able to give your further suggestions for reducing it.
