Information on Herbs for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes skin cells to build quickly on the surface of the skin. As a result of this, thick silvery scales or dry, red patches form on the skin. The condition may also cause a thickening of the nails as well as painful, swollen joints. The skin covering the elbows and scalp are common areas for psoriasis to occur. There is no cure for psoriasis and treatment consists of topical treatments, light therapy and medications. Some alternative therapies, such as herbs may help treat psoriasis. Consult a physician before taking any herbal supplements or alternative medicine to treat psoriasis.

Feverfew

Feverfew is an herb available as a dried leaf, tablet or capsule. Taking the supplement may help reduce the inflammation associated with psoriasis. People allergic to ragweed, sunflower, chamomile and aster should not take feverfew because they are members of the same plant family. Possible side effects of feverfew include an increased heart rate and a decrease in blood clotting as well as a headache, dizziness, headache and menstrual changes. There is insufficient evidence for rating the effectiveness of taking feverfew for psoriasis.

Fish Oil

Taking fish oil is another possible way to help reduce inflammation associated with psoriasis. The inflammation might decrease because of the omega-3 fatty acids contained in the fish oil. Although fish oil is available in capsule form, taking fish oil through an IV may help treat severe psoriasis symptoms. Large doses of fish oil may reduce the ability of the immune system to fight infections.

Aloe

Applying a cream made from an aloe plant may help treat the symptoms associated with psoriasis. The most effective treatment with aloe may include spreading a 0.5 percent cream to the skin three times daily for four weeks to help reduce the psoriasis plaques on the skin.

Dong Quai

Dong quai is a plant used for medicinal purposes. Using the root portion of the dong quai plant in a cream form may help treat psoriasis. The herbal supplement may increase sensitivity to the sun and increase the risk of bleeding.

Capsaicin Cream

Using a cream made from chili pepper extract, called capsaicin cream, may help treat the symptoms related to psoriasis such as itching. Applying the cream may cause a burning sensation, especially for the first few applications.
