Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder in which multiple cysts form on the kidney, which causes it to become enlarged. If you have polycystic kidney disease, you might experience headache, bloody urine, back pain, kidney stones, urinary tract infections and even kidney failure. While this condition is primarily treated with medications, improvement in your diet can help control polycystic kidney disease.

Step 1

Avoid salty foods as much as possible to eat healthy with polycystic kidney disease. Excessive salt intake increases your blood pressure, which can compromise your kidney function. Do not eat more than 2,300 mg of salt per day to reduce stress on your kidneys.

Step 2

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, which contain many vitamins and minerals that keep your body naturally healthy. Furthermore, eating at least five or more fruits and vegetables per day will help your manage your weight, which is necessary for optimal health with polycystic kidney disease.

Step 3

Consume more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain breads, brown rice and brown pastas. Eating more complex carbohydrates will help control your blood sugar levels, which will prevent damage to your kidneys that is associated with high blood sugar levels. Avoid simple sugars, such as table sugar, juices, sodas, white rice and white pastas.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take all of your medications as directed.
