Attention-deficit disorder, commonly referred to as ADD, is a mental health condition that can cause a severe impact on your daily functioning and overall quality of life. ADD is typically compounded by the presence of hyperactivity, in which case it is referred to as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. ADD/ADHD is characterized by inattentiveness, overactivity and impulsiveness, and there is no cure. Medication is usually the first option to treat the disorder. However, ADD can potentially also be effectively managed without medication by using natural or alternative options. Never self-treat, though, without first getting the approval from your doctor.
Step 1
Make a daily plan with your child to create structure and help him to focus on priorities. Ask him to tell you about the homework assignments he has to complete for tomorrow, and write down the order in which he will complete them. Check off each task as it is completed. Children with ADD often find the concrete structure of a written plan soothing and are then better able to concentrate on specific tasks.
Step 2
Limit distractions in your child's immediate environment. Children with ADD are easily distracted by seemingly small or inconsequential things. When it's time to do homework, turn off the TV and the ringer on the phone.
Step 3
Ensure that your child eats a healthy, well-balanced diet. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, eating right and getting enough essential nutrients may help to manage some of the symptoms of ADD.
Step 4
Create a soothing bedtime routine. It is essential for children with ADD to get enough sleep. Run a warm bath, read a soothing or humorous bedtime story and give her a glass or warm milk. Make sure the room is quiet, the curtains are closed and the bed is comfortable. Children with ADD can be upset or aroused by noises and discomfort.
Step 5
Consult a homeopath to discuss homeopathic remedies for ADD. According to naturopath and homeopathic doctor Jane Oelke in her book, "Natural Choices for Attention Deficit Disorder: For Adults and Children Who Want to Achieve Mental Clarity," certain homeopathic remedies may help to alleviate some of the symptoms of ADD and reduce your child's overall stress levels.
Step 6
Encourage your child to get plenty of exercise. Don't let him just sit in front of the TV playing video games. Sign him up for an after-school sport or buy him a bike, rollerblades or a skateboard. Getting fresh air and exercise will help to burn off excess energy.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask your general practitioner for a referral to a psychotherapist who specializes in treating ADD or ADHD. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, behavioral modification techniques are often effective in re-directing problematic behaviors. Therapists may teach social, time management, organizational and/or self-monitoring skills to improve the condition and your quality of life.
