Ayurvedic medicine is the ancient holistic practice of achieving wellness through balance. Trained Ayurvedic practitioners spend years learning how to identify mind-body-spiritual imbalances and the appropriate treatment method for correcting these imbalances. Ayurvedic treatments include lifestyle, dietary and even habitual changes, depending on how the imbalance manifests itself. These alternative practices cleanse the body and soul of impurities through herbal, mental and physical treatment modalities. Consult your doctor before using any herbal remedies.
Step 1
Select an appropriate Ayurvedic remedy by identifying the primary dosha. Ayurvedic medicine has three doshas -- the vata, pitta and kapha -- which are present in all people in varying degrees of dominance. Vata doshas are easily excitable and prone to skin, heart and sleep problems. Those with dominant pitta doshas exhibit high levels of stress that manifest in cardiovascular disease and digestion problems such as frequent heartburn. The kapha dosha regulates growth; kashas are pone to incurable diseases such as diabetes, cancer and asthma.
Step 2
Undergo a detoxification program arranged by an Ayurvedic practitioner prior to initiating herbal remedies. Detox removes ama from the body; ama is the toxic buildup of food residues that leads to imbalance and disease. Work with the Ayurvedic practitioner to choose a technique used for detoxification. Herbal concoctions, enemas and massage are just some methods used for Ayurvedic detox.
Step 3
Employ a treatment of samana. This is the Ayurvedic name given to herbal therapies or treatments used to re-balance the doshas. Unlike Western medicine, Ayurveda does not treat individual symptoms, such as prescribing cough medicine for a cold. The practitioner uses diagnostic tools, including an elaborate physical assessment, to decipher the symptomatic impact suffered from the dosha imbalance. Use the appropriate herbal remedy two to three times daily or as recommended by the Ayurvedic practitioner.
Step 4
Reassess the status of dosha balance after using the prescribed herbal remedy. If something remains off or symptoms persist, check with the Ayurvedic practitioner, as a dosha may remain imbalanced.
