Vitamin B-12 is an essential vitamin required by the body. This vitamin aids in red blood cell production, proper neurological function, and DNA formation. In addition to a supplement, this vitamin can be obtained in animal-based foods including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, and milk products. Some breads and cereals may be fortified with this vitamin. It is important to be aware that vitamin B-12 may interact with certain medications, leading to a decreased effectiveness of the vitamin or medication, or to potential harm to your body. Consult your doctor before taking vitamin B-12 at the same time as other medications.

Interaction With Tetracycline

If you are taking tetracyclines, then you should not simultaneously take vitamin B-12, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Vitamin B-12 can disrupt the absorption and intended effect of tetracycline and therefore you should take each of these substances at different times of the day. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that all B vitamins interact with tetracycline in this way.

Interaction With Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol, also known as Chloromycetin, is a bacterial antibiotic that may interact with vitamin B-12. According to the National Institutes of Health, research has indicated that this medication can disrupt your blood cells responsiveness to vitamin B-12. Research is limited and more studies are required to establish a link between this medication and vitamin.

Interactions With Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors are medications used in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. These drugs include omeprazole, also called as Prilosec, and lansoprazole, also called Prevacid. Proton pump inhibitors can reduce the release gastric acid release into your stomach and also disrupt the absorption of vitamin B-12, according to the National Institutes of Health. You should consult your doctor before taking this supplement and medication simultaneously.

Interaction With Histamine H2 Receptor Antagonists

Histamine H2 receptor antagonists include drugs such as Tagamet, Pepcid, and Zantac. These drugs are used in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and act to reduce the rate of hydrochloric acid release into your stomach. They also disrupt absorption of vitamin B-12. Studies are mixed and more research is required to establish the link between these two substances. Consult your doctor before taking vitamin B-12 with these drugs.
