Pinched nerve pain in your lower leg occurs when too much pressure is applied to the tissues in your lower back surrounding your largest nerve, the sciatic nerve. Though the most severe pain is felt in your leg, compressed lower spinal nerves can cause sharp pain from your rear to your feet, according to chiropractor Steven G. Yeomans. Homemade treatments can help alleviate the painful symptoms associated with this pinched nerve, often called sciatica. Consult your doctor before attempting to use any homemade treatment for sciatic nerve pain.
Step 1
Make a cold pack to reduce inflammation and provide relief from sciatic nerve pain. Wrap an ice pack or package of frozen peas in a clean towel, and place on painful areas. Use for up to 20 minutes a day, several times a day, advises MayoClinic.com.
Step 2
Apply a hot pack two to three days after your sciatic nerve pain begins ease. Combine herbs such as hay flower, white or black mustard seeds, chamomile and horsetail in a hot, moist pack. Crush seeds, place in a small cotton sack and soak in hot water for 10 minutes before applying.
Step 3
Heat 50 mg of mustard seed oil and 3 to 4 pieces of chopped garlic seeds in a small beaker until the garlic turns almost red, then massage the mixture on your leg.
Step 4
Add 10 to 20 drops of chamomile extract to a cup of boiling water and consume once daily, advises the Herbs 2000 website.
Step 5
Place a tablespoon of fresh herbs such as yarrow, celery and horsetail in a juicer to extract the herbal juices. Drink this juice daily, as needed.
Step 6
Mix 1/4 cup of milk and 2 raw crushed garlic cloves to make a garlic milk to relieve intense nerve pain in your leg. Boil garlic milk and let it cool to reduce the smell; however, it is most effective when uncooked. Drink ½ cup twice daily, advises Herbs 2000.
Tips and Warnings
- If you experience irritation when using a hot pack with mustard seed, try using flaxseed instead.
- Herbal treatments are not scientifically proven to benefit sciatic nerve pain. Apply mustard seed mixtures for only 10 minutes at a time to prevent irritation. Check with your doctor before using any herbal remedy, as some herbs can interact negatively with certain medications, and affect pregnant women and organ function.
