You can lose up to 10 lbs. in 12 days if you adhere to the grapefruit diet. Introduced in 1930 by Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, its purpose was to give dieters a jump start by losing a large amount of weight in a short amount of time. Although this diet was created by a doctor, check with a health-care practitioner before using it.

Step 1

Eliminate all sugars and starches while using this diet plan. If you consume sugars and starches, your body will burn these for energy before burning fat. You are, however, allowed as much meat, salad and vegetables as you desire.

Step 2

Eat or drink grapefruit or grapefruit juice with each meal. The fat-burning enzymes found in grapefruit are the catalyst that begins the fat-burning process. Eat 1/2 a grapefruit or drink 4 oz. of grapefruit juice with each of your three meals.

Step 3

Indulge in your meals. Breakfast should consist of two eggs and two slices of bacon. Lunch is any type of meat in any portion accompanied with a salad, and dinner is meat in any portion accompanied by vegetables cooked in butter if you choose. Never skip a meal or change the combination of foods in a meal. While the grapefruit begins the fat-burning process, eating the right combination of foods burns fat.

Step 4

Stop yourself from eating between meals. Eating between meals destroys what you are trying to accomplish on the grapefruit diet. If you eat until you are full at each meal, you will not have the desire to snack.

Step 5

Choose your drinks carefully. Eight 8 oz. glasses of water are necessary to replace any fluids you lose during the dieting process. Water is vital for all of your body functions and has no calories. If you drink coffee, limit yourself to one cup each day. Anything more can interfere with the fat-burning process.

Step 6

Take two days off before repeating the diet. If you have success with the diet, take a least two days off before using the plan again. It is meant to jump start a healthy diet, such as a low-calorie plan, not replace it.
