Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by constant, widespread pain. According the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, approximately 5 million adults over the age of 18 are affected by fibromyalgia. Between 80 and 90 percent of adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.
Symptoms
The pain associated with fibromyalgia is usually described as a constant dull ache. In order to be considered fibromyalgia, the pain must affect both sides of the body. Another common symptom of fibromyalgia is tender points, which are areas on the body that hurt when pressure is exerted on them. The most common tender points are the back of the head, the top of the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, the hips, inner knees, upper chest, elbows and the front of the neck. Fibromyalgia may also cause fatigue, headaches, depression, anxiety and gastrointestinal problems.
Medical Treatment
Although medications cannot cure fibromyalgia, they can reduce the severity of symptoms and make the condition easier to live with. Medications called analgesics can reduce the pain and stiffness associated with fibromyalgia. They can also reduce inflammation. Antidepressants may be prescribed to help with depression and fatigue that may develop as a result of fibromyalgia. If you cannot sleep, sleeping medication may also be prescribed. Anti-seizure drugs may also help reduce the pain associated with fibromyalgia.
Exercise
Regular exercise can help reduce the severity of your fibromyalgia symptoms. While at first exercise may increase the pain, eventually your body will adapt to it and it can actually improve your condition. Walking, swimming, biking and stretching are good exercises for someone with fibromyalgia.
Stress reduction exercises, such as yoga and meditation, can also help improve the anxiety and depression associated with fibromyalgia. These stress reduction exercises may also help improve your sleep cycle and reduce the feelings of fatigue associated with the condition.
It is important to pace yourself. Overexerting yourself can worsen your condition and is not recommended.
Diet Recommendations
Eating a balanced diet can help keep you healthy and energized. Your diet should consist of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and low-fat dairy. A healthy diet is the foundation to your day. If you do not eat right, your body will not have access to energy and it can make your fatigue worse. Caffeine should also be avoided since it can cause energy crashes and make fatigue worse.
