One of the beautiful things about soccer is the simplicity of the game. The rules are easy to learn, and you can play an informal match on almost any piece of flat ground. Preparing for a game is also simple. You need very little equipment, and the clothing requirements are straightforward.

Jersey

Soccer jerseys should be lightweight and made of material that allows the body to breathe. Most soccer clubs supply their players with jerseys to ensure that the team members are all dressed the same while playing. These jerseys also display each player's number on the back. Short sleeves and long sleeves are both acceptable.

Shorts

Wear shorts that do not restrict your ability to run or turn during a game. Overly long, thick or heavy shorts can restrict your freedom of movement. Soccer shorts should be lightweight but durable with an elasticized waistline. Some shorts have a cord running around the waistline that you can tie at the front for a more secure fit.

Socks

Soccer socks should be quite thick and long enough to reach to just below the knee. Your shin guards will fit inside your socks, so length is important. Players sometimes wear two pairs of socks, a standard pair of thick soccer socks over a much thinner variety. This helps prevent blistering caused by your feet rubbing against your cleats.

Underwear

The type of underwear you play in is a matter of personal preference. Some male players wear a jockstrap without a cup, while others wear tight-fitting boxer shorts. Professional players often wear compression shorts, a specialized, thigh-length variety of sports underwear.

Second Layer

Soccer players can wear a second layer, such as a T-shirt or vest, underneath the soccer jersey. This is quite common in cold playing conditions, particularly among players from hot countries playing in chilly foreign climates. According to the official FIFA Laws of the Game, the color of the undergarment sleeve must be the same color as the sleeve of the outer jersey.

Goalkeeper Clothing

Goalkeepers also wear shorts and jerseys. However, the jersey must be a different color from that worn by the other players. Goalkeeping shorts and jerseys feature additional padding to help protect the goalkeeper's arms and sides when diving to save the ball. Unlike other players, goalkeepers are allowed to wear pants.

Shoes

Wear soccer cleats when playing competitive soccer on grass surfaces. This gives you extra grip and helps prevent injuries caused by slips and slides. You should wear indoor soccer shoes without cleats on all artificial surfaces.

Shin Guards

Shin guards protect your shins from kicks and other impacts, a common occurrence during tackles. There are two main types of shin guards. Strapless "slip-in" shin guards are held in place by your socks. Shin guards with straps are more bulky but offer extra ankle protection.
