Peruvian Maca Side Effects

The native Peruvian plant Lepidium meyenii walp, commonly called maca, is a vegetable similar to turnips. Historically, maca is used as a traditional medicine to enhance fertility and sexual desire while also reducing stress. Before consuming this Peruvian vegetable, be sure to talk with your doctor about maca side effects.

No Side Effects

Treatment with maca supplements is generally regarded as safe and well-tolerated. No specific side effects have been associated with maca supplementation. However, seek additional care from your physician if you develop any unusual health problems while taking this supplement.

Goiter

If you have a thyroid condition, such as hyper- or hypothyroidism, be sure to talk with your doctor before using maca. Maca contains a class of compounds called glucosinolates, which may cause your thyroid gland to swell -- a condition called goiter, Drugs.com reports. Symptoms associated with goiter may include vocal hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, coughing or a visible swollen mass at the base of the front of your neck. If you exhibit any of these side effects following treatment with maca, consult your primary medical provider.

Drug Interactions

Health professionals with the University of Michigan Health System report that as of January 2011, there are no well-known drug interactions associated with maca. Talk with your physician about possible interactions with medications you are currently taking before you begin using maca supplements, however, so your condition can be monitored.

Contraindications

Discuss any health concerns you may have with your health care provider before beginning treatment with maca. Women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should avoid taking maca, as the safety of this supplement has yet to be fully evaluated in this patient population.
