Boxing requires significant training before you get in the ring. You must do a lot of conditioning work before a fight because if you get fatigued once a fight gets past the first few rounds, there is a good chance that you can get hurt because your reactions will be slowed and you won't be able to defend yourself to the utmost. However, you also have to work on your boxing skills -- offense, defense and movement -- to advance in the sport.
Speed Bag
The speed bag is one of the most effective training tools in boxing. The speed bag will help you to become an accurate and fast puncher, and it will also help your conditioning. Use your jab when working on the speed bag. Hit the bag with your jab, let it bound off the back rim, rebound to the front rim and hit the back rim again before striking it again. Hit the speed bag with three or four jabs before introducing your right hand to the drill.
Heavy Bag
The heavy bag is a dynamic tool to become a strong power puncher. When you hit the heavy bag, you learn quickly that power punching is a function of getting your body behind the punch. You cannot just use your arms and upper body to generate power. Instead, start the power punch from your feet and legs, get your core muscles involved, and then get your shoulders, arms and fists involved.
Shadow Boxing
Top fighters will use shadow boxing to prepare for fights. When you get in the ring and fight against air, you will need great discipline to work on your form. Practice your jab, your left hook, your right cross and your right jab. Introduce movement while you are working on these punches to become effective in a boxing match. Plan out your combinations and use the ones you feel most comfortable throwing while shadow boxing.
Sparring
To find out where you stand in your sport before you have an official bout, you must get in the ring and spar with a fighter of similar size and experience. You may train very hard and you could have learned the key lessons in boxing, but you have to put yourself to the test by doing it against a live opponent. You will wear oversized gloves and head gear when sparring, but you are at risk to getting hit with hard punches. You must put yourself to the test by sparring to train properly for a serious bout.
