Bipolar disorder can benefit from natural help in addition to medication. Make sure you work with a provider and let her know what the forms of natural help you are using. If you ever feel suicidal or out of touch with reality, see a doctor right away.

Sleep

Sleep deprivation and getting lots of early-morning sun can help relieve the depressive aspects of bipolar, but be watchful for potential mania.

Exercise

Getting in a good workout, whether from hitting the gym or the walking trail, can help improve your mood. You'll also feel better knowing you're working hard to help yourself.

Eat Right

Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids might help, but again, be watchful for symptoms of mania.

Help From Others

Psychotherapy and social support can help you work out problems, and relieve isolation and stigma. Attending peer-support groups will help you learn about recovery and coping skills from others who have similar experiences.

Warning

All treatments can have side effects, even natural ones. Stay in close touch with your doctor.
