What Is GNC's Preventive Nutrition Cleansing Formula?

GNC's Preventive Nutrition Cleansing Formula is basically a colon cleanser. It uses a combination of fiber and probiotics to expedite the passage of waste through the digestive tract. This not only treats and prevents constipation, but is also thought to improve the health of your intestines, which may correct certain health problems as a result of toxins and waste lingering in your colon.

Colon Cleansing

Like other colon cleansing products, GNC's Preventive Nutrition Cleansing Formula is formulated to improve the health of your digestive system. Proponents of this practice believe that toxins in the digestive tract lead to health problems. These health issues may include irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, asthma, fatigue, headaches and weight gain. By taking a dietary supplement, like GNC's Cleansing Formula, you rid the body of these pollutants, thereby improving your overall health.

Evidence

No scientific evidence exists to support colon cleansing. Your colon has the capacity to maintain a balance of intestinal flora, which remove toxins and waste all on their own. This helps protect you and your digestive system from infection. You really don't need a product to facilitate this process. The only true need for colon cleansing comes into play prior to a colonoscopy. Your colon must be completely void of waste before this procedure. Other than that, something like GNC's Cleansing Formula isn't really necessary.

Ingredients

The main ingredient in GNC's Preventive Nutrition Cleansing Formula is psyllium husk, which contains a relatively high amount of dietary fiber. Fiber adds bulk to your stool, making it much easier to pass waste. Taking fiber shouldn't cause any harm. Some colon cleansing products on the market contain stimulant laxatives, which can lead to dependency. This product doesn't posses this risk. It also contains a number of probiotics, which are bacteria that can benefit your overall health.

Warning

GNC's Preventive Nutrition Cleansing Formula contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, or L. acidophilus, a bacterium found naturally in the small intestines. It's considered a probiotic, since it does have benefits within your digestive tract. However, it shouldn't be taken orally if you're suffering from intestinal damage, a weakened immune system or an overgrowth of intestinal bacteria. It may increase your risk of serious infection. Talk to your doctor before using GNC's Cleansing Formula or any other supplement to clean the colon.
