How to Take 5-HTP While Pregnant

The brain uses chemicals known as neurotransmitters to allow neurons to communicate. Low levels of some neurotransmitters, including serotonin, have been linked to psychiatric disorders such as depression. One way you can try to boost your serotonin levels is to take substances that the body can use to make serotonin, such as 5-HTP, also known as 5-hydroxytryptophan. 5-HTP supplements may be able to help with anxiety, sleeping problems, pain and other disorders, but its effects on pregnant women are not known, so this supplement should be used with caution.

Step 1

Purchase 5-HTP from a reliable source. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that a contaminant, known as Peak X, has been found in some tryptophan and 5-HTP supplements, which can lead to a dangerous condition known as eosinophilic myalgia syndrome. Because of this, it is important to only purchase supplements from a reliable source, such as a major drugstore chain, to reduce the risk of receiving contaminated 5-HTP.

Step 2

Talk to your doctor about the risks associated with taking 5-HTP. There is not enough evidence to prove that 5-HTP is safe for pregnant women, eMedTV notes, partly due to the risk of contaminants and partly because it is not known what effects this medication can have on a developing fetus. In addition, 5-HTP can interact with some medications, including antidepressants such as fluoxetine, amitriptyline and venlafaxine, according to InteliHealth. 5-HTP can also interact with other medications, such as some blood pressure drugs and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Make sure you understand all of the risks associated with 5-HTP supplementation before taking this compound.

Step 3

Take 50mg of 5-HTP one to three times per day. This is the standard dose cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center, as higher doses may be toxic. It may take several weeks for you to feel the effects of this drug.
