When heading out on a cycling trip, you need to bring along a variety of gear. Essential bicycling gear includes safety equipment, accessories and the proper clothing items. While most cycling gear has been designed for all types of riding, other pieces are made for a specific type.

Helmet

The helmet remains one of the most useful pieces of cycling gear. A properly fitted helmet reduces the chance of injury. A common helmet design, known as the road helmet, often has an elongated shape. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, a road helmet features a series of vents that offer increased airflow. Helmets used for extreme forms of cycling, such as BMX, have a bowl or dome shape. Downhill mountain bikers often wear a full face helmet. The full face model stretches around your jaws for increased mouth protection.

Hydration Pack

Staying hydrated while cycling helps you ride farther and faster. While many cyclists fasten a water bottle onto the frame, others opt for a hydration pack. Cyclists simply suck on the sip tube to drink from the cloth sack, which has an internal reservoir made of polyurethane. The hydration pack fits on your back with the use of shoulder straps. According to cycling experts at outdoor fitness retailer REI, mountain bikers often carry a large hydration pack that can carry up to 3 liters of liquid. Road cyclists generally opt for a smaller model.

Clothing

According to the ABC of Mountain Biking website, the best cycling clothes are made of a quick drying polyester. Cycling shorts often feature a breathable design that can absorb moisture and protect against chafing. When riding at night, always wear a reflective jersey to remain visible to motorists and other cyclists.

Shoes

When choosing a pair of cycling shoes, choose ones that fit your bike. Specialized road and mountain biking shoes allow you to fasten the cleats into the pedals and increase your pedaling efficiency. Shoes made for BMX biking feature a padded tongue as well as a foam or gel heel insert. BMX shoes help to prevent heel bruises during high-impact tricks.
