If exercising at home fits into your busy schedule, but you are missing the results from your gym's pull-up machine, you may want to purchase a pull-up bar. Pull-up bars for use at home are available in removable or permanent styles. Most bars fit inside your door jamb, so keep in mind that the width of your door opening is the widest hand placement you will be able to achieve.

Removable

Step 1

Set the supportive side of the pull-up bar onto the top of your door frame or onto your basement support beam.

Step 2

Rest the side supports of the bar on the opposite side of the door jam, or allow the bar to hang from the beam.

Step 3

Place your hands on the longest bar to perform one pull-up to test the security of your bar.

Permanent in a Wall

Step 1

Locate the wall stud next to the top of your door frame with a stud finder.

Step 2

Hold the J-hook on your pull-up bar upright, and mark the wall over the studs to match the holes in the J-hook.

Step 3

Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the holes in the J-hook, and drill into the marked holes.

Step 4

Place your J-hook in line with your drilled holes, and tighten the J-hook screws into place with a screwdriver.

Step 5

Place your pull-up bar across your doorway and into the hooks, and perform a pull-up to test the security of your bar.

Permanent in a Door Jamb

Step 1

Hold a pull-up bar bracket in your door jamb at a height that you can reach, and mark the holes on the jamb through the holes in the bracket.

Step 2

Measure from the top of the door jamb to the top of your bracket. Use that measurement to evenly place the other bracket on the opposite door jamb. Use your pencil to mark the holes.

Step 3

Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the holes in the bracket, and drill the holes as marked.

Step 4

Place the screws in the brackets, and screw them securely into the wall, using your screwdriver.

Step 5

Place the bar in the brackets and perform a pull-up to check for stability.
