Ringworm is a fungal infection that arises in the topmost layer of the skin. Ringworm of your body, also called tinea corporis, is similar to fungal infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch and scalp itch. Despite its name, ringworm is not associated with worms under your skin. Consider using natural treatments, such as herbs, for ringworm. Talk to your physician about this treatment before using it.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a common skin condition. This fungal infection can develop in people of all ages, although it is particularly common in children. Ringworm is contagious and can spread to humans from other people, animals, contaminated objects or surfaces, and soil. Indications that you may have ringworm include a round, flat area of itchy skin and a red, inflamed and circular rash surrounding a healthy patch of skin. Complications associated with ringworm are rare except in people with HIV/AIDS.

Herbal Treatments

Fungal infections can be extremely difficult to treat. Certain herbs may help destroy fungal infections or keep them at bay, however. Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," says that some herbs have anti-fungal properties, including wild oregano oil, tea tree oil, goldenseal, pau d'arco, pepper tree, yellowroot, barberry, Oregon grape root and bloodroot. Other anti-fungal herbs include black walnut, garlic, old man's beard, paracress and yarrow.

A Potent Herb

Wild oregano is a potent anti-fungal herb. It fights free radicals, reduces inflammation and helps treat fungal, bacterial and viral infection. Wild oregano improves the vitality of your immune system, and it has been helpful for treating skin infections, parasitic infections, eczema, acne, allergies, fatigue, headache, urinary tract disorders and wounds. This herb may also help treat athlete's foot, digestive problems and gum disease. The leaves, shoots and stems of the wild oregano plant contain numerous medicinal ingredients.

Warning

Ringworm and other fungal infections can be extremely difficult to treat. In most cases, herbs should be used in combination with other therapies suggested by your health care provider to achieve optimal health benefits. Certain herbs may pose health risks in some people. You should never consume or use herbal medications until you understand their risks and benefits. If you experience negative health side effects from using herbs, discontinue their use immediately and consult your doctor.
