Colloidal silver contains tiny particles of ground silver suspended in liquid that is touted as an alternative remedy for multiple health conditions. Before 1938, it was used as a disinfectant and a germicide, according to SteadyHealth.com. This substance is advertised as a dietary supplement; it is illegal for it to be marketed for medical reasons in the United States. No reliable research data have been reported by the United States Food and Drug Administration regarding the validity of taking this supplement for medical purposes. Serious side effects are associated with colloidal silver.

Neurological Effects

The accumulation of silver in the body can lead to harmful side effects. For example, if silver builds up in the body from regular doses of colloidal silver, neurological problems may occur and manifest in the form of seizure activity, the Mayo Clinic reports. Headaches also may present. Always consult with your health care provider before beginning a new supplement.

Renal Effects

In addition to neurological consequences, another area that may suffer serious side effects from colloidal silver is that of the kidneys or renal system. The kidneys excrete waste products and toxic substances from the body. As silver goes through the kidneys, the silver particles may end up damaging these organs over time, especially in people with a medical history of kidney disorders; therefore, if you have a history of kidney disease and are considering this supplement, speak with your physician first.

Skin Discoloration

With continued use of this product, silver begins to accumulate in the skin and tissue of the body. The result is the condition known as argyria, a permanent irreversible bluish gray discoloration of the skin, nails and gums as well as internal organs and the membranes in the eyes (conjunctiva), the FDA states in a 2009 consumer advisory. The FDA advisory clarifies that while argyria is not a life-endangering condition, it is possible that some individuals may suffer significant psychological or social negative consequences due to this highly visible condition.

Medication Interaction

Supplements that contain silver can interfere with certain prescription medications that you may be taking, according to both the Mayo Clinic and the FDA. Specifically, the FDA states that the body's ability to absorb the following medications may be reduced by colloidal silver: quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin; tetracycline antibiotics; thyroxine; and penacillamine. It is important that you check with your doctor before taking supplements that contain silver so that it does not affect medications that you are taking.
