How to Start a No Carb Diet

A no carb diet is a restrictive eating plan that involves eliminating carbohydrates completely from your diet. You'll instead get most of your calories from protein sources and healthy fats. You can drop a lot of weight quickly on a no carb diet since it can help resolve fluid retention. Before you start a no carbohydrate diet, check with your doctor to see if this is a good weight loss plan for you.

Step 1

Read food labels. If you aren't permitted carbohydrates on your diet, you need to get into the routine of reviewing food labels. Nutrition labels will list how many carbs are found in a particular food item.

Step 2

Determine the foods that you can consume on a no carbohydrate diet. Proteins, such as beef, pork, turkey, chicken, veal, fish, and eggs are typically allowed on no carb diet. Some fats, like olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and seeds are permitted as well. Stock up on these items to prep for your no carb diet. Besides breads, rice, and potatoes, many vegetables and fruits are also restricted.

Step 3

Get rid of the high carb beverages. Starting a no carb diet will involve getting rid of the high carb drinks in your home, like soda, sports drinks, and fruit juices.

Step 4

Make smart dining out choices. If you go to an Italian restaurant or fast food chain, you may have limits on food choices. Steak houses and seafood places are likely better options.

Step 5

Skip the sauces and condiments. Sauces and condiments may make your food taste better, but are typically loaded with carbs. Ketchup and barbeque sauce are especially high in carbs.

Step 6

Purchase vitamin supplements. No carb diets can be low in important nutrients, such as fiber. You should use a fiber and multivitamin supplement while following the eating plan.
