Diabetes is a medical condition in which the body cannot properly use sugar in the blood as energy. Diabetes is the result of decreased insulin production or insulin resistance to the body's tissues. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to serious complications, including nerve damage, vision loss, frequent infections, heart disease and amputations. You must learn to manage your diabetes professionally to prevent serious complications.

Step 1

Purchase a glucometer, testing strips and lancets from your local drug store. You may be able to have your insurance company pay for a portion of your diabetes supplies. Contact your insurance company to find out if your plan covers it.

Step 2

Check your blood sugar levels as recommended by your doctor. Some patients should check before meals and two hours after meals, while others only need to check periodically.

Step 3

Clean the tip of your finger with an alcohol wipe. Make sure the alcohol dries before you check you prick your finger.

Step 4

Prick your finger with the lancet. Make sure the prick was deep enough to allow a drop of blood to come out of your finger. Wipe away this first drop of blood with a tissue.

Step 5

Turn on the glucometer. Attach the testing strip to the glucometer. Touch the end of the testing strip a drop of blood on your finger. Allow the glucometer to register your blood glucose reading. Once the reading registers, write your reading in a journal to track. Bring your journal with you the next time you visit your doctor.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep a piece of candy or glucose tab with you in the event your blood sugar levels drop too low.
  • Always take your diabetes medication as directed.
