Sinus headaches are caused by an inflammation of the sinuses. The mucus lining that protects the nasal passageway swells and can cause irritation including pressure and headaches. There are many products on the market for fighting headaches or for promoting sinus health, but there are even more natural remedies; one is chamomile. Chamomile is a herb widely used for its soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities. Although chamomile is used widely for treating headaches, there is no solid evidence indicating that chamomile is an effective treatment for headaches. As with any herbal product, you should always consult a health care professional before using chamomile to treat sinus headaches.
Step 1
Drink chamomile tea at the onset of headache symptoms to prevent the headache from worsening. Chamomile tea can be purchased at local grocery stores in the tea and coffee section. You can also find chamomile tea in health or natural food stores.
Step 2
Use chamomile oil to clear the sinuses through aromatherapy. Make a vapor by filling a large bowl with boiling hot water. Add a few drops of chamomile oil to the bowl and stir with a spoon. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl to breathe in the vapors. Make sure the bowl is completely covered and the vapors are sealed in under the towel. Do this until the water cools for best results. Add around 10 drops of the oil to a your bath water and have a relaxing soak. You can also add a few drops to an oil diffuser to spread the chamomile scent around the room.
Step 3
Take chamomile in the form of supplements and extracts. Chamomile's properties have been incorporated into health products, such as pills and extracts, and can be taken to help with sinus headaches. You can find these products in health food stores and herb shops. Read the directions for dosage information, as they differ from product to product.
