5 Things You Need to Know About Running For Beginners

1. Start Slowly

A classic mistake for the beginning runner is trying to go too far too fast. When starting a new running regimen, mix in some walking. For example, take 30 minutes the first two weeks; run for ten of those minutes and walk for the other 20. Then in the next weeks, run and walk for 15 each. Eventually increase the running until you are doing 30 minutes, then increase the running period. Not only do you risk injury if you start too intensely, but also you risk failure if you don't ease into the running regimen.

2. Make a Plan

Before beginning a running program, write down exactly what you plan to accomplish. Set specific goals concerning distance and time. Make certain that goals are attainable and that they account for all the other priorities in your life such as family, friends and work. Do not get frustrated if not all the goals are met. Striving for these goals is the important thing.

3. Habitual Running

Integrate this new running regimen into your daily life. If you say to yourself, "I will run when I get a chance," chances are this running program will not succeed. Make this exercise part of your life rather something you do whenever your life allows. Setting a specific time of day and certain days of the week can assist greatly in staying with the program. Once running becomes a habit, you will view it as a habit rather than an arduous task that is outside your normal life.

4. Strength in Numbers

Seek out other runners in your family or circle of friends with which to collaborate. These people can offer advice and on days when you are too tired or busy to run, can help keep your fledgling running program going.

5. Proper Equipment

No two people are the same, and this especially true of body composition. Go to a local specialized running store and have your feet measured and your running gait tested. There are shoes that will work better for your foot structure and running gait. The right pair of shoes can make all the difference in the world for the beginning runner.
