A variety of herbs and herbal remedies help to reduce or stop bleeding caused from topical cuts and injuries to internal bleeding such as that caused by menstruation or injuries, coughing up blood and blood in stools and urine. Many ancient herbal remedies may prove effective for such conditions, and may be utilized with contemporary medical practices in Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAD) practices, but people should always seek the advice of their health care provider when treating with herbs to ensure they don't interact with medications, and to make sure sources of bleeding are assessed. Traditional Chinese medicine use a large number of herbal remedies and treatments, some more common than others.
Small Thistle
Known as xiaoji in Chinese, the small thistle or herba cirsii segeti is a flowering herb that is harvested in summer and then dried and chopped into small pieces. Intended to treat the Liver and Heart meridians of the body (in Chinese traditional medicine), the herb functions to cool the blood and stop bleeding.
Agrimony
Agrimony, known in China as xian he cao, has been used by ancient cultures around the world to stop bleeding. The entire herb is plucked in summer or early fall and dried and cut into small pieces to create a liquid tincture that may be combined with other herbs according to need.
Yunnan Baiyao
The powder yunnan baiyao has been (and continues to be) used by Asian cultures for centuries to stop bleeding caused by injury through its main ingredient known as san qi, or notoginseng. The powder has been used in combat for generations to help stop bleeding caused by gunshot wounds, but has also been commonly used to reduce excessive menstrual periods for women.
Bai Ji
Bai ji is known in English as bletilla rhizome, and has been used to stop bleeding from nosebleeds, ulcers and lungs.
