The Shimano Ultegra refers to a group of components designed to boost the performance of your bike. The lightweight parts help to decrease the weight of your bicycle frame, making it easier to pedal forward. The derailleurs are the components that shift your chain between the sprockets of the gear cluster as well as the chain rings. The right handlebar shifter controls the rear derailleur, while the left handlebar shifter engages the front derailleur of the Ultegra package.
Pedal your bicycle forward until you attain a comfortable speed. Pull back on the left shifter to move your chain between the various chain rings. Shift your chain to the middle ring, or the number two, on your left shifter; this is appropriate for most recreational rides.
Pull back on the right shifter to move the chain between the various sprockets of the gear cluster. Shift your chain to the largest sprocket when climbing hills. Move the chain to the smallest sprocket when traveling at a high rate of speed.
Pull the left shifter to move the chain to the smallest chain ring when climbing extremely difficult hills. Shift the chain between gears one and three with the right shifter to fine-tune your ride. Move the chain back to the middle chain ring before engaging gears four through seven.
Pull the left shifter to move the chain to the largest chain ring when navigating down steep hills. Shift the chain between gears seven and five to fine-tune your ride. Move the chain back to the middle chain ring before engaging gears one to four.
