The sport of wrestling requires athletes to perform a variety of throws, takedowns, holds and pins. To improve the ability to perform these skills, athletes wear specialized wrestling shoes designed to improve mobility and flexibility while providing ankle support. Sizing wrestling shoes is determined by the length and width of your foot, but the process differs slightly from sizing other athletic shoes.
Sizing
Use a ruler to measure your foot length and width in millimeters. Foot length is the longest distance between your heel and toe, while the width is the longest distance between the sides of the foot. Reduce each measurement by 5 mm to determine the best shoe size for your feet, as typical wrestling shoes run slightly smaller than normal athletic shoes. Asics and Adidas recommend adding half a size to their wrestling shoes, while Nike recommends adding one full size. Most wrestling shoes are available in regular widths, with only a few styles available in wide widths.
Fit
Determine the size and fit of a wrestling shoe by evaluating the toe area, width area and heel area. As you try on different brands, styles and sizes, consider each of these areas for optimal fit. The toe area should have a comfortable, glove-like fit that allows room for your toes while standing up straight. Width should fit comfortably without stretching the upper over the midsole, and the heel should have a snug fit because of the limited amount of padding in the heel.
Stretch
The combination of lightweight, breathable mesh and synthetic materials used to make wrestling shoes give them additional stretch after a few practices. As a result, choose a snug fit while trying on wrestling shoes at the store. Having a loose pair of wrestling shoes can decrease your traction, speed and agility on the mat.
Comfort
The most important consideration is the overall comfort. Additional features on certain wrestling shoes, such as integrated lacing systems or Velcro adjustment straps, can improve their comfort and fit. In addition, look for wrestling shoes made from lightweight synthetic materials on the upper, and ones with high ankle support and quality rubber soles for traction and support during practice and competitions.
