Cranberries are a low lying shrub that grow in wetlands and bear a red fruit. It is a popular fruit found in homes during the holidays, being the main ingredient in cranberry sauce. Cranberries are also harvested for making cranberry juice. Cranberry juice has medicinal qualities and is one of the main uses of this fruit. While there are many companies that sell cranberry juice, making it at home is simple and healthier in that homemade cranberry juice is fresher and will contain more nutrients than store bought juice. It also will not contain unwanted additives and chemicals -- and you can control the amount of sugar you add.
Step 1
Wash the cranberries thoroughly and then place the cranberries and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then immediately reduce the heat to medium. Cover the pan with a lid and let the cranberries simmer for around 10 minutes. When most of the cranberries have burst open, take them off the stove. The water should be bright red.
Step 2
Strain the liquid back into the sauce pan with a sieve lined with cheese cloth. Add the sugar and mix with a whisk. Taste the juice and add more sugar if desired. Let this cook for an additional three minutes.
Step 3
Pour the juice in a container and cover. Set it in the fridge to cool.
