If you are thinking about training to become a yoga teacher, an internationally recognized qualification could be much more beneficial than other options. Rather than being tied to one area or fitness club, an internationally recognized qualification would give you the freedom to teach anywhere in the world.

Why an International Qualification?

If you are already a qualified exercise teacher, there are many training providers within the fitness industry offering yoga teaching modules as an add-on to your existing qualification. These courses are great if you want to teach fitness yoga classes within your current club or gym. However, if you want to become a recognized and respected yoga teacher, you should look for a course that is certified by the Worldwide Yoga Alliance. The Yoga Alliance promotes teachers who have completed programs that meet its minimum training requirements. When you complete your course, you will be eligible to become a Registered Yoga Teacher, and then, with further training and experience, an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher.

What the Qualification Involves

A yoga teaching qualification that is certified by the Yoga Alliance asks for 200 hours of study. You will cover the basic yoga postures and the many variations that stem from them, breathing, relaxation, diet and meditation. You will study the anatomy and physiology of yoga, nutrition, and teaching practices that will enable you to instruct a yoga class and be aware of the different requirements for your participants. You will also look at safe practices for children, pregnant women, older people and others with special requirements.

Course Attendance

Registered yoga schools offer many ways in which you can complete your 200 hour yoga teaching qualification. Some run intensive residential courses, while others offer weekly blocks, training on weekends or in the evenings. Some courses may ask you to complete a certain amount of self-study as well as attending their training, so look into this before you enroll. With many different training options available, you should be able to find one to suit your needs.

Course Requirements

To complete your teacher training program, you will often be required to have a basic knowledge of yoga. Some training providers ask that you have been practicing yoga for a certain length of time and may seek testimonials from your teacher. You should ensure that you attend all of the training sessions. These will involve practical classes in which you practice and improve your own yoga technique or instruct others to develop your teaching skills. There will also be classroom lessons in which you will cover the theories behind the practice. At the end of the training period, you will complete both practical and written assessments.
