As you age, so does your metabolism. As your metabolism slows with age, you might find it harder to lose weight quickly, and it is especially true for your late 30s. As family obligations, time constraints and your work life monopolize your time, you might find it hard to squeeze in a workout here and make a healthy meal there. Finding ways to streamline your health and fitness routine in your late 30s can help healthy living become a good habit for you.
Step 1
Start counting calories. It might sound tedious at first, but Health.com recommends slashing 500 calories from your daily intake to lose weight while in your 30s. This means becoming more aware for how much you're eating, understanding portion sizes and learning about foods that will keep you full even with lower calories.
Step 2
Rev up your metabolism. As you age, your metabolism begins to slow down, meaning that you no longer burn calories and fat as effectively as you did as a teenager. Being conscious of your metabolism, and what can help it to work more efficiently, can put you in control of your weight. Eating smaller meals more often to keep it burning, exercising with weights to add muscle and engaging in cardiovascular activity to burn excess fat are all ideal ways to rev a metabolism in your late 30s.
Step 3
Set weight-loss goals for yourself. Often you are so busy doing things for everyone else in your family, your job and friends that you don't take the time to assess how you're doing. Give yourself an appointment each week where you sit down, write in a weight-loss journal and assess your progress. Make a goal each week, like not drinking soda for a week, always taking the stairs at work or not eating in the car.
Step 4
Involve your family with your weight-loss goals. The chances are that in your late 30s you'll have some preteen or even teenage children who understand that you're working toward losing weight. Use them as checkpoints and use the opportunity to talk about healthy eating. Prepare dinner as a family, or go participate in a physical activity like ice skating together. Your family time can do double duty as your activity time to help you lose weight and stay healthy as a family.
Step 5
Talk to your doctor if you've made changes in your lifestyle and you still haven't seen any weight loss. As you age, you're more likely to deal with health problems that prevent you from losing weight. An underactive thyroid gland may not be regulating your metabolism to burn calories effectively, or your hormones may be playing a part in your lack of weight loss. Your doctor can talk to you about medications and therapy to help your body work better so you can lose the weight.
