How to Use Acidophilus Balanitis

Balantis is a condition that causes the tip of the penis to become inflamed and is most common in uncircumsized men, who may also develop inflammation of the foreskin, MedlinePlus reports. It can cause a rash, pain and a foul-smelling discharge. In some cases, balantis is caused by an infection of Candida albicans, the same organism responsible for yeast infections. Some cases of balantis can be treated by increasing the amounts of "good" bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, which can help crowd out the Candida fungi.

Step 1

Consume yogurt with active acidophilus cultures. Many kinds of yogurt are labeled as containing "active cultures," which include Lactobacillus acidophilus. Eating yogurt with these bacteria is touted by some alternative health practitioners, who recommend eating yogurt with these active cultures as a treatment for balantis, Encyclopedia.com notes.

Step 2

Take an acidophilus supplement. Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements are available in tablet, powder and liquid form, Drugs.com notes, and these can help add more of these beneficial bacteria to your body. Take these supplements according to the instructions on the packaging, since the amount of bacteria can vary depending on the type of supplement.

Step 3

Improve your genital hygiene. Often balantis is caused by not properly washing the penis, especially if you are uncircumsized. Washing the penis and the inflamed area with a gentle soap will help remove the Candida fungi, particularly if you are increasing your consumption of Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria.
