Antioxidant-rich foods are desirable because they fight off cancer-causing free radicals and help strengthen your immune system. When you go on a diet, it is important to be sure you have a well-rounded eating plan that includes plenty of foods with antioxidants. Many are low in fat and calories as well, making them helpful in any weight loss program.

Berries

Most berries can be part of a diet because they are rich with antioxidants. According to the Mayo Clinic, the top sources of antioxidants are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries and strawberries. Some other berries that contain antioxidants but are not as well known are goji berries, bilberries and black currants.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Most cruciferous veggies are rich with antioxidants and contain phytonutrients that help combat cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. These vegetables include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and collard greens. These can be cooked, steamed or eaten raw with little effect on nutrient value.

Dark Leafy Greens

Leafy green vegetables make excellent diet foods because they are low in fat and calories and contain plenty of fiber, iron and calcium, in addition to antioxidants including vitamins C and E, lutein and beta-carotene. Kale, spinach and swiss chard are examples of leafy green vegetables. These make great side dishes to lean proteins or can be used in salads.

Fish

Fish contain plenty of antioxidants, protein, selenium and omega 3 fatty acids. These greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, making them amoong the best diet foods around. Tuna, herring, salmon, trout and mackerel are some of the most nutrient-dense fish. Just be sure to prepare them properly. Use techniques such as steaming, grilling or baking instead of frying.
