Bats are sold by their weight, in ounces, and their length, in inches. You should first check the rules of the league you are playing in. Different leagues have varying rules regarding the size and type of bats allowed. Make sure you purchase a bat that is legal in your league. Use your height, age and weight to narrow down the size of the bat. Try out several bats to see what feels best for you.
Step 1
Determine the approximate length of the bat using your age. If you are age 5 to 7, use a 14- to 26-inch bat. Ages 8 or 9 should use a 26- to 28-inch bat, and age 10 a 28- to 29-inch bat. If you are 11 or 12, use a 30- to 31-inch bat. Ages 13 or 14, should choose a 31- to 32-inch bat and ages 15 or 16, a 32- to 33-inch bat. If you are 17 or older, select a 34-inch bat.
Step 2
Use your height and weight if your age does not provide you with an appropriate length. If you are tall for your age or small for your age, using your age may not help you select the proper bat length. Use the chart provided in the references to determine the bat length with your height and weight.
Step 3
Determine the correct bat weight using your height if you are a Little League player, between ages 8 and 10. If you are between 48 and 50 inches tall, use a 16- to 17-oz. bat. Use a 17- to 18-oz. bat if you are between 51 and 54 inches all, and an 18- or 19-oz. bat if you are between 55 and 59 inches tall. If you are taller than 60 inches tall, use a 19- or 20-oz. bat.
Step 4
Determine the correct bat weight using your weight if you are in youth league, ages 11 and 12. Players less than 80 lbs. should choose an 18- to 19-oz. bat. If you are between 81 and 100 lbs., try a 19- to 20-oz. bat. You should try a 20- to 21-oz. bat if you weigh between 101 and 120 lbs. Use a 21- to 22-oz. bat if you weigh between 121 and 140 lbs., and a 22- to 23-oz. bat if you weigh more than 141 lbs.
Step 5
Determine your bat weight by your height if you play high school or college baseball. If you are between 66 and 68 inches tall, choose a 27- to 28-oz. bat. If you are between 69 and 72 inches tall, use a 28- to 29-oz. bat. Try a 29- to 30-oz. bat if you are between 73 and 76 inches, and a 30- to 31- oz. bat if you are taller than 77 inches.
Step 6
Use the mentioned guidelines to narrow down your selection of bats. Every player is different. You cannot select your optimal bat just from your age, weight and height. Swing several bats. Choose the one that feels the most natural and comfortable.
