A hernia can be caused by lifting weights or using improper lifting technique, among other things. It can make it difficult or painful to exercise. However, there are certain weight loss exercises that are comfortable for hernia patients. The quickest way to get started losing weight is to focus on your diet and exercise program -- much like healthy individuals would but with a few variances to accommodate your condition.
Hernia
A hernia is a sac that forms in the lining of the abdomen that pushes through a weak area of the fascia, or the strong wall inside the abdominal cavity. There are four types of hernias: inguinal -- occurs in the groin region, femoral -- occurs in the upper-thigh, incisional -- occurs in scars caused by abdominal surgery and umbilical -- hernia around the belly button area. Being overweight increases your risk of hernia, so it's important to maintain a healthy weight to prevent future hernia problems. The only treatment for hernias is surgery.
Exercises
Avoid weightlifting routines that cause pressure to your abdomen, and be sure not to hold your breath while you exercise because it puts a strain on your abdominal muscles. Focus on resistance training exercises that work your major muscles: legs, chest, back and arms/shoulders. Exercising your muscles will help burn calories and boost your metabolism, which are essential components of any weight loss plan. Start slowly and use light weights when applicable. Try the following exercises three times per week: step-ups, calf raises, inclined push-ups, bicep curls, tricep dips and single-arm rows. If you experience any abdominal pain, stop immediately and consult your doctor.
Diet
Your diet is the second component of losing weight. Follow the United States Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid Plan, which is based on low-calorie foods rich in nutrition and low in salt, sugar and saturated fats. MyPyramid is a free online dieting tool that tells you exactly how many calories to eat each day as well as the types of foods to focus on. Exercise alone will not help you lose weight, so don't overlook the weight loss benefits of a healthy diet.
Safety
Make sure to consult your doctor before starting an exercise regimen. He or she may recommend you wear some sort of abdominal support while you exercise to help reduce stress on your abdominal muscles. If any exercise listed above causes you abdominal pain, discontinue it immediately. You must focus on using proper technique, using light weights, breathing during each movement and not making any jerky or sudden movements during a repetition.
