How to Avoid Ringworm

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that can affect your feet, body, scalp and genitals. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD) states that fungus is abundant and found just about everywhere. It can be on people, floors and soil. A fungus sheds spores (seed-like material), grows into new fungus and spreads. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of ringworm include a circular red and itchy rash that forms a ring pattern. These infections are usually harmless but need immediate attention. If you want to avoid ringworm, there are specific ways to do so.

Step 1

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water frequently throughout the day. This will help decrease the spread of ringworm.

Step 2

Avoid pets that may carry ringworm. If your pet has ringworm, it will have bald patches on its fur. Go to your veterinarian to have your pet promptly treated.

Step 3

Avoid sweating excessively. Stay in air-conditioned environments and avoid humidity. The fungus that causes ringworm breeds well in moist and warm environments.

Step 4

Do not share personal items such as makeup, towels or clothing. If these items carry the fungus that causes ringworm, you can easily develop ringworm.

Step 5

Wash your feet daily and keep your feet cool and dry. Use cotton or wool socks to prevent fungus from developing in your shoes.

Step 6

Do not walk barefoot in public places. For example, use slippers if you take a shower at a public place like your gym. Fungus can be located on the bathroom floors.

Step 7

Avoid family members and friends who have ringworm until they are treated for it. Ringworm can spread easily if an infected person touches your skin.
