How to Lose Weight With Diet Coke

You can lose weight rather quickly by choosing to drink Diet Coke instead of Classic Coke or other sugary sodas. Regular soda contains empty calories, which could spoil any weight loss plan. In an interview with "Whole Living" magazine, Nieca Goldberg, spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says sugar-laden sodas increases your risk of diabetes -- and not just because they contain too much sugar --- but because people who typically drink unhealthy beverages tend to eat unhealthy too.

Step 1

Replace regular sodas with their diet versions. A 12 oz. can of Coke Classic contains 140 calories, but its diet version contains zero calories. If you normally drink three cans of Coke daily, you would consume 420 calories less per day just by drinking Diet Coke. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends replacing sugar-laden sodas with diet soda as a temporary solution until you can stop drinking sodas altogether. You can stop drinking Diet Coke after you lose the weight you need to lose.

Step 2

Drink Diet Coke in place of sugar-laden snacks. Between meals, grab a Diet Coke instead of a candy bar. As an example, a Hershey's chocolate bar contains 210 calories. If you drink Diet Coke in place of two Hershey's bars each day, you would consume 420 fewer calories.

Step 3

Drink more water. Ease off on all sodas so you can lose even more weight. According to Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, author of "Your Body's Many Cries for Water," sodas dehydrate the body, so that any water you do drink, the body wants to retain or conserve. This leads to water retention, and water retention can cause you to gain weight.

Step 4

Make a weight loss plan that includes diet soda, but also includes healthy, low-fat foods. Every time you want to drink a Diet Coke, make a commitment to eat a piece of fruit or vegetable. This helps you lose weight and keep weight loss permanent. It also helps you establish healthier eating habits and patterns.
