The Health Risks of Poor Nutrition

If you are not getting the nutrition you need, your body and mind are not being fed properly. This can cause many diseases and complications, but dietary modifications can help to promote health and reduce the risk of disease. Talking to a health care professional or a nutritionist can help you identify areas of poor nutrition, as well as give you information on how to obtain the nutrients you need.

Hypertension

Hypertension, another word for high blood pressure, may be caused by variety of factors, including heredity, but it can also be caused by poor nutrition. According to the Mayo Clinic, a diet high in sodium and excessive use of alcohol can also be risk factors for developing hypertension. If you are not getting enough potassium, this is also a risk factor because potassium helps balance the amount of sodium in your cells, says the Mayo Clinic.

Heart Disease

Diseases of the heart are grouped under the term heart disease, and diet is one of the risk factors you can modify to help avoid developing heart disease. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are all risk factors for heart disease, and a poor diet that is lacking in vitamins and minerals the body needs can help cause all of these risk factors. The American Heart Association recommends limiting trans- and saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium, and emphasizing whole grains, fruits and vegetables to help minimize your risk of heart disease. Eating disorders like anorexia can also cause heart problems, including abnormal heart rhythms, which can damage the heart, says the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Obesity

Obesity, or a lack of body fat, is a serious condition that can cause numerous health problems. A diet high in fat, fast foods, lack of whole grains and fruits and vegetables, as well as lack of activity can all contribute to an individual becoming obese. The detrimental effects of obesity can include depression, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, skin problems, stroke, gynecological diseases and certain types of cancers, says the Mayo Clinic. If you are obese or overweight, consult with your health care provider to see ways you can improve your diet and incorporate physical activity into your routine.

Vitamin Deficiencies

If you are not getting proper nutrition, you may not be getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. Lack of various vitamins can include anemia, osteoporosis, memory loss, neurological problems, muscle weakness and degeneration, eye problems, heart problems, insomnia and depression and anxiety, according to something-fishy.org. Taking a multi-vitamin can help to supplement your diet and minimize your risk of deficiencies.
