If your arthritis is affecting the flexibility of your fingers and hands, you do have options. Depending on the type and severity of the arthritis you suffer from, you may require arthroscopic surgery or a bone fusion on your fingers. However, your physician may be able to recommend certain exercises that increase range of motion and hand strength, as well as hand flexibility. Consult with your physician to see which option is best for you.

Finger Curls

This arthritis exercise improves your range of motion in your fingers. Stand up straight with your knees slightly bent and arms at your sides. Bend your right arm at the elbow until your forearm is parallel with your upper arm. From here, extend your fingers up towards the sky. Curl all of your fingers down, making sure to keep your wrist straight as you curl. Hold this for a few seconds before extending your fingers again. Relax, and repeat with your other hand.

Open Wide Hand Exercise

This hand exercise will increase flexibility and range of motion in your hands. Bend your left arm at the elbow so that your forearm and upper arm are parallel with each other. From here, extend your fingers up towards the sky while spreading them out as far away from each other as possible. Hold this stretch for a few seconds before bringing your fingers together. Repeat the exercise with your other hand, adding repetitions as you improve.

Finger Tip Touch

This finger tip exercise will help stretch out your fingers as well as improve your dexterity and range of motion. Bend your left arm at the elbow until it is parallel with your upper arm. From here, make an O shape by touching each one of your fingers to your thumb. Start with the pinkie, and finish with your index finger. After touching each finger, open your hand wide, and relax for several seconds. Repeat with your other hand.

Walk Your Fingers

This exercise will strengthen your hands as well as improve their flexibility. Place one hand on a flat surface, with your palm down and fingers extended. Starting with your index finger, try to bring the finger as close to your thumb as possible without moving your wrist or thumb. Get as close as you can, and hold this position. Repeat this with your other three fingers, bringing each one as far as it can go in the direction of your thumb. Repeat with your other hand before completing the exercise.
