Along with skill and conditioning, the field hockey stick you choose may be the most important element of your game. Your stick is the tool you use to handle the ball, and if you play with one that is not right for your style of play or body type, your game will suffer. Asking yourself some questions and doing research ahead of time will help narrow down your choices.
Step 1
Set a budget for a new stick to help narrow your search and eliminate those sticks that are out of your range.
Step 2
Analyze your game to help get an idea of what type of stick would suit you the best. Lean toward a lighter stick of about 19 to 20 oz. if you are a forward, an average stick of 21 oz. if you are a midfielder and a heavier 22 to 24 oz. stick of you are a defender.
Step 3
Borrow sticks from teammates in practice to get a feel for different sizes, weights and brands. This may give you a better idea of where to begin your search in the store.
Step 4
Measure the stick by placing the blade on the ground beside you. Choose a stick with a height about 1 to 2 inches below your waistline.
Tips and Warnings
